Belgium
Open 10th August 2001
Coming off a disappointing 9th at the World Championships in Austria,
Julian "the Thunder from Down under" Prosser and Lee Zahner,
were out to prove a point at the next stop for the World Tour in
Ostende, Belgium.
The main draw commenced on the 10th August. In the first round the
Prosser Zahner combination were up against the 16 seeds of Roberto
Lopes and Franco from Brazil. Lee and Jules won the match in three
sets 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-13).
The other Australian team of Slack-Novosel went down to the
15th seed Ahmann-Hager from Germany in straight sets 21-17, 21-18.
Julian and Lee were up against a wall in the second round facing
the number one seeds from Brazil of Emanuel and Tande. In, what
can only be described, as the upset of the tournament Zahner-Prosser
downed the number one seeds in three sets 1-2 (16-21, 21-15,
13-15).
This fantastic win opened up the draw for the two Australians giving
them a relativly easy third round match against the 25th seeded
Fabio Diez - Correa pairing from Spain. The Aussies winning in straight
sets 21-15, 21-14.
Slack and Novosels campagin ended against the number one seeds Emanuel
- Tande in straigh sets 19-21, 17-21. The Brazilians out to prove
why they are the first seeded team on the World Tour. This loss
gave the second Australian team a 17th in the event.
Prosser and Zahner faced yet another Brazilian team of Ricardo-Loiola.
The Australians were defeated in 2 13-21, 20-22.
The Australians were eventually knocked out of the event by the
number one seeds that they had defeated earlier in the event Emanuel
- Tande in two easy sets 21-17, 21-12. This gave Prosser and
Zahner a 5th Finish in the event.
For the record the final placings for the event saw Emanuel-Tande
(Brazil) get the Gold Medal, Second Ricardo-Loiola (Brazil) with
third going to Swiss pairing of Laciga P.- Laciga M.
